Duke Kahanamoku Statue

Landmarks
  • A true gentleman, Duke was aloha personified.

Few modern-day figures have been as wholly beloved and revered as Duke Paoa Kahanamoku. The “Ambassador of Aloha” was a hero many times over for his feats as a waterman. His statue, circa 1990, offers a physical manifestation of a spiritual presence that will never leave Waikiki.

Highlights

  • Duke was an Olympic swimming medalist for two decades, winning three golds.
  • In 1925, he and his surfboard rescued eight people at Newport Beach, CA.
  • It is customary to drape a lei on the statue.
